A Sense of Place

Winter 2009-2010

…Through these and earlier changes, Oren Furniss’ family practiced the values that reflected the essence of their father’s character: appreciation and deep respect for the land surrounding them, knowledge of how harsh this valley can be for the unprepared, and an ongoing commitment to one another and their neighbors that kept them buoyed and connected in both good and difficult times…

The Herd Mentality

October 14, 2009

…All of these samples reminded me suddenly that yes, I had eaten lamb before.  The taste is unmistakable.  “Gamey” is not the word.  Lamb possesses a distinctly pungent twinge to its make-up of flavors that, if cooked incorrectly, could turn out to be a disaster for both diner and chef.  Let’s face it.  Lamb is the stinky cheese of herd animal meat…

The Garden Café Defines Quality

May 20, 2009

…I am smitten.  While I listened to the man in the Chicago Cubs hat explain his vision – that he wants his diners to feel as if they are getting personal attention with every meal – he said the magic words.  “I make my own bacon.”  My head snapped up from my notepad as I tried to absorb the impossibility that I might now somehow adore a Cubs fan…

The Teton Chronicles

Teton Valley Time

March 15, 2009

…This is my neighborhood now, and those Snake River Peaks seem far away and somewhat mystical from my location.  The closer you get to them, the more you want to drive into them.  You want to blaze through Pine Creek Pass in Victor and take in more – and just round the next turn – even more.  And the further you go, the closer you get to the Snake River – a winding water-filled scar on the earth that traverses Idaho and continues on through Oregon…

An Experiment Gone Right

February 11, 2009

…Sufficed to say, the mad scientist that lives inside Ric Harmon will continue to try and build on a dream that is being lived in Victor, Idaho within the walls of Wildlife Brewing.  As changes occur and expansion continues, the basic core values of his endeavor will remain the same.  Good food and good beer, one experiment at a time.  Those that eat there just need to sit back and enjoy the ride…

A Grand Wedding

You Want Me to do WHAT at Your Wedding?

2008 Issue

…The more I talked about my upcoming adventure in matrimony making, the more real it became.  A wedding is an occasion that should have some degree of reverence.  When you consider all that could go wrong up there – talking too fast, crying uncontrollably… or worse, such as cracking up for no apparent reason – the task itself can seem a little daunting.  Involve others in your preparations, and listen to their words of advice and encouragement…

Fine-tooth Combs

Summer 2008

…Tordie was raised in a family of seven children in the area around Stavanger, Norway.  During World War II, her parents were forced to house three dozen German soldiers in the hotel they owned and operated.  Tordie’s family endured this hardship for five long years of occupation.  Despite the situation, the family eventually came to understand that these young Germans, too, were victims of circumstance, and they became fond of the soldiers…

Broomball!

Winter 2007-2008

…On a crisp, cold night in Teton Valley, the cry of “Broooooombaaaaaall!” suddenly rings out.  The one voice is echoed by many others, repeating the call in response.  After ample repetition, the vocal enthusiasm subsides, replaced by heavy-metal music booming from a sound system mounted on a small blue tractor.  Near the corner of Bates and Main in Driggs, the game is on…
